Finish Biohazard in Dowdun Reach by bringing 10 Corrupted Essence Samples to Zanik beneath The Approach, collecting Dragon Blood, Unholy Water, and a Twilight Lily, and investigating Putrilius on the roof of the Grand Hall. After speaking to the corrupted chicken, return to Zanik to resolve the investigation and receive the Zamorak Cape and its recipe.
You need access to Dowdun Reach through partial progress in Black Knight's Fortress. The raven collection, three-item delivery, and rooftop conversation are separate stages, so complete Zanik's instructions in order. The final investigation is a dialogue interaction with Putrilius, not an instruction to defeat the chicken.
Reach Zanik Beneath The Approach
Biohazard is a secondary quest in Dowdun Reach. Its starting point is Zanik beneath The Approach, although collecting a Corrupted Essence Sample from a corrupted raven can also begin the task. Both entrances lead to the same requirement: collect ten samples from the ravens and bring them to Zanik.
If you already found a sample while exploring, do not treat that as permission to skip the conversation with Zanik. Keep the item and use the quest objective to establish the next step. You still need the complete ten-sample delivery before the investigation moves on to the other ingredients.
The access condition matters when planning the trip. This is not a starting-area task that can be completed before you reach Dowdun Reach. Continue Black Knight's Fortress far enough to enter the region, then locate The Approach and the position beneath it where Zanik waits.
Choose the correct conversation when you arrive. Zanik is connected to other quests elsewhere in Ashenfall, but this objective concerns the corruption in Dowdun Reach. Check the investigation wording and sample requirement rather than assuming every conversation with Zanik advances the same assignment.
Prepare for Raven Collection and the Roof
Bring good armour and a ranged option with arrows or bolts. The collection stage requires corrupted ravens, while the later route passes hostile enemies near the Cathedral and Grand Hall. A weapon that reaches the target is useful for the raven step, but the task does not establish a specific ammunition type or an exact number of shots.
Keep Windstep available for the final climb. Putrilius is on the roof of the Grand Hall in The Nexus, so being able to reach the building's ground-level entrance is not the same as being able to reach the conversation. Plan for a vertical approach after the ingredient delivery.
The required quest items are organized into two deliveries. First comes the batch of ten samples. After handing those in, Zanik asks for Dragon Blood, Unholy Water, and the Twilight Lily. You can keep any Dragon Blood already available, but check the current objective before setting out for the named water and flower locations.

The fragment exchange is separate from understanding the main quest route. Do not count the first ten samples twice in a supply plan: they are the collection required by Zanik at the start. The later trade with Putrilius explicitly asks for ten samples for its own exchange.
Gather Ten Corrupted Essence Samples
Look for corrupted ravens within Dowdun Reach. Collect their Corrupted Essence Samples until you have a total of ten. The quest allows the first sample to trigger the assignment, but one sample only starts the process; it does not satisfy Zanik's full collection request.
Use the active map and objective while searching the region. The ravens are scattered through Dowdun Reach, so the collection does not depend on a single guaranteed location or a fixed spawn timer. Check the sample total in your inventory after collecting rather than assuming that ten raven encounters necessarily mean ten retained samples.
- Enter Dowdun Reach with access established through Black Knight's Fortress.
- Speak to Zanik beneath The Approach, or keep the sample that started the quest during exploration.
- Find corrupted ravens around the region and collect the named sample item.
- Continue until your inventory contains ten Corrupted Essence Samples.
- Return to Zanik and complete the sample delivery conversation.
The item name is the useful checkpoint. You are collecting corrupted essence for this investigation, not a general feather supply or another raven drop. If you have been fighting birds but the collection objective remains incomplete, inspect the inventory for the exact sample rather than using the number of enemies fought as your progress measure.
When you return with ten, finish the relevant conversation before leaving. The next stage begins when Zanik asks for the additional three ingredients. Check that request so that you know the investigation has moved beyond the collection phase.
Obtain the Three Ingredients
Zanik's second request names Dragon Blood, Unholy Water, and a Twilight Lily. These come from different sources, so plan them as three distinct pickups. A fountain visit does not produce the lily, and killing a dragon does not finish the water objective.
Choose a Dragon Blood Source
Dragon Blood can be obtained by slaying a dragon in Dowdun Reach. If that encounter is unsuitable for your current setup, a dragon wolf in Fellhollow is an alternative source. The alternative gives you a way to obtain the required material without forcing the entire ingredient stage to depend on defeating a Dowdun Reach dragon.
Choose the option that matches the enemies you can manage. Staying in Dowdun Reach keeps the collection within the quest region, while returning to Fellhollow changes the travel plan. Neither option removes the requirement to bring Dragon Blood back to Zanik alongside the other two items.
Check that you retain the blood for the quest delivery rather than spending it on a crafting project during the trip. The objective is an ingredient hand-in, so having obtained the material earlier does not help if it is no longer available when you return.
Find the Twilight Lily at The Lake
The Twilight Lily is at The Lake, southwest of Zanik. Look for a blue-glowing flower in front of an anima tree. The combination of the lake, the tree, and the flower's glow is more useful than searching every plant in Dowdun Reach.
Approach that location and collect the Twilight Lily. This is a specific named quest pickup, so inspect the flower interaction before moving on. Other vegetation or materials around the tree do not replace it.
Once you have the lily, retain it with the other ingredients and continue to the water location. The task does not ask you to cultivate the flower or prepare it at a crafting station. Its role here is to be delivered to Zanik as one of the requested ingredients.
Collect Unholy Water Behind The Cathedral
Go behind The Cathedral and look for a statue with water flowing from its hands. The area includes three Zamorakian acolytes, a mage of Zamorak, and two elite Black Knights. Those enemies explain why a direct approach can be hazardous, but killing them is not a requirement for collecting the water.
The fountain is southwest of the nearby group, and you can approach it quietly to collect Unholy Water. Focus on identifying the statue and completing its interaction. Clearing every enemy around the Cathedral would turn an item pickup into a larger fight without changing the water requirement.
The ordinary water used elsewhere in your supplies is not the quest item. Check for Unholy Water after the fountain interaction, then leave the area with the named ingredient. The flowing-water statue is the landmark that distinguishes this pickup from a general lake or water source.
Deliver the Ingredients Before Visiting Putrilius
Return to Zanik after collecting all three items. Speak to her and complete the ingredient delivery. Zanik then asks you to locate the source of the corruption, which sends the quest into its final investigation stage.
If the conversation still concerns the raven samples, resolve that earlier step first. If it asks for the three ingredients, review your inventory for Dragon Blood, Unholy Water, and the Twilight Lily individually. Completing only one or two pickups leaves that stage unfinished.
Avoid going straight to the roof simply because you know where Putrilius is. Following the delivery order keeps the active objective aligned with the conversation you need there. The shortest route is the one that completes the required interaction at each stage without creating an unnecessary return trip.
Reach Putrilius on the Grand Hall Roof
Head to The Nexus, then make your way to The Grand Hall. Use Windstep to climb to the roof. Watch for the Black Knight sniper and Black Knight guardian around the approach; reaching the roof still involves moving through a hostile area.
Putrilius is the corrupted chicken on the roof. Interact with the chicken and complete the dialogue. The relevant action is to finish the conversation that reveals the investigation's result. You do not need to invent a dialogue-choice code or treat Putrilius as another enemy in the collection stage.
Once the conversation is complete, return to Zanik. Tell her what you found at the Grand Hall and finish the hand-in dialogue. This closes Biohazard's investigation and grants the Zamorak Cape with its recipe.
Separate the Cape Reward from the Fragment Trade
The cape and recipe come from completing the quest. 50 Infernal Fragments are available by trading 10 Corrupted Essence Samples with Putrilius. Keep that exchange distinct from the initial ten samples Zanik requested.
If you want the fragments after finishing the investigation, gather or retain the ten samples needed for the trade and return to Putrilius. Do not describe the fragment total as an automatic extra inventory grant from simply speaking to Zanik at the end. The named exchange is the action that links the samples to the fragments.
Check the Stage When Progress Stops
Zanik still asks for samples. Count the exact Corrupted Essence Sample items and complete the first delivery. A quest entry or a single sample only establishes the task; ten are required for that stage.
The ingredient conversation stays incomplete. Verify each item by name. Dragon Blood, Unholy Water, and Twilight Lily are separate requirements, and ordinary water or unrelated plants do not fill those slots.
The Grand Hall is reached but Putrilius is absent from view. Check the roof rather than searching only the interior or ground level. Use Windstep for the climb and inspect the rooftop after dealing with immediate pressure from the nearby knights.
The rooftop conversation is finished but Biohazard remains active. Return to Zanik. Learning the result and reporting it are different steps, and the final conversation with her is what closes the investigation.
