Dragon Slayer Quest Walkthrough

Quick Answer

Start Dragon Slayer with the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village. Follow Cathan’s trail, craft the Challenge Horn, defeat Velgar and return with the dragon head.

Start Dragon Slayer by speaking to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village after completing First Steps. The full route is: claim a basic shelter, bring him antlers, read Cathan’s Journal at the Keep of Blue Flames, speak to Spitfoot inside the Whispering Swamp vault, find Cathan’s ghost at Velgar’s Rise, craft a Challenge Horn, defeat Velgar, and hand the dragon’s head to the Wise Old Man.

The main progression gate comes before the boss. You cannot make the Challenge Horn until Cathan gives you its recipe, and you need an iron pickaxe plus an iron logging axe to collect its two special materials. Do not travel to Velgar’s Rise expecting to fight him immediately.

Dragon Slayer route and requirements

Dragon Slayer is a primary quest and the opening quest of the main Kuldra’s Saga storyline. It sends you from Bramblemead through the Whispering Swamp and into Ghornfell before the final battle.

The quest’s encounters include goblins, giant and putrid rats, vault guardians, Garou, and Velgar. Treat every move into a new region as a separate expedition: finish the current objective, restock at your base, and then continue.

Start Dragon Slayer in Bramblemead

Speak to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village. His first objective is not a fight. He wants you to establish a usable shelter before beginning the search for Cathan.

Build at least one foundation, three walls, and a ceiling. Put a bed roll inside the covered structure and claim it. Placing a bed without completing and claiming the shelter will not satisfy the objective. Return to the Wise Old Man after the bed has been claimed.

The Wise Old Man at the Dragon Slayer quest start in Bramblemead Village

The Wise Old Man next asks for antlers so that he can cast a locator spell. Deer tend to flee, making a ranged or magic weapon much more practical than chasing them with a melee weapon. Hunt a deer, collect one set of antlers, and take it back to him.

After you deliver the antlers, the Wise Old Man’s spell points toward a castle in the valley. This advances the search for the missing adventurer Cathan. The early antler stage also grants Tome of Construction – Vol 1.

Find Cathan’s Journal at the Keep of Blue Flames

Travel to the Keep of Blue Flames in Bramblemead Valley. The castle contains many goblins, so arrive with food and combat equipment rather than treating the highlighted search area as a simple pickup objective.

Fight or move through the castle and climb to its upper level. Cathan’s Journal is lying at the top beside a loot chest. Reading the journal is the required trigger; merely entering the quest circle or clearing enemies does not complete the investigation.

When you read it, you learn that Cathan continued toward a blue-flame door in the Whispering Swamp. Velgar then descends on the keep and attacks around the gate with poison. This is not the final boss fight. Avoid the poison attacks and leave the keep instead of trying to finish the quest there.

Enter the Whispering Swamp vault

The blue-flame door is the entrance to the dragonkin vault Vertentis Kara in the Whispering Swamp. Restock before entering the swamp. Antipoison supplies are recommended because the route and its enemies expose you to poison, while food is important for the fights inside the vault.

The blue-flame entrance to the Vertentis Kara vault in Whispering Swamp

Enter Vertentis Kara and make your way through its enemies and hazards. Expect rats and multiple vault guardians rather than a direct walk to a quest marker. Your actual objective is Spitfoot, a goblin found near the end of the vault.

Speak to Spitfoot. He explains what happened during Cathan’s journey, including Cathan’s betrayal and his decision to continue toward Ghornfell. The conversation is mandatory. Clearing the vault without speaking to Spitfoot can leave the objective looking unfinished.

Return to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead after the conversation. He concludes that Cathan must have believed he had a way to confront Velgar and sends you into Ghornfell to continue following the trail.

Locate Cathan’s ghost at Velgar’s Rise

Enter the Fractured Plains area of Ghornfell and follow the objective toward Velgar’s Rise, the monumental tower at the center of the region. This part of the route introduces Garou enemies, so it is a meaningful difficulty increase from the opening objectives in Bramblemead.

At Velgar’s Rise, find and speak to Cathan’s ghost. Cathan explains that the Garou captured him, dragged him to the tower, and sacrificed him before Velgar. He then gives you the recipe for the Challenge Horn—the quest item that can call Velgar into the tower arena.

Obtaining this recipe is the dividing line between the investigation and the boss preparation. The altar at the top of the tower is not usable for the final encounter until you craft the horn.

Craft the Challenge Horn

The Challenge Horn requires exactly three ingredient types:

  • 1 Dragon Tooth
  • 1 Bloodwood Sap
  • 5 Bronze Bars

You also need two upgraded gathering tools. An iron pickaxe is required for the Dragon Tooth, and an iron logging axe is required for the Bloodwood Sap. Having the recipe without both tools is not enough to finish the material run.

Collect the Bloodwood Sap

Travel to the castle at the southernmost point of Bloodblight Swamp with an iron logging axe. Find the Bloodwood tree inside the castle to collect Bloodwood Sap. Bring antipoison supplies and expect Garou resistance around the resource area.

Use the iron logging axe to harvest at least one Bloodwood Sap. Once you have the required sap, you can leave; the quest does not require a broader Bloodblight resource-farming route.

Mine the Dragon Tooth

Travel to the western Stormtouched Highlands with an iron pickaxe. Go past the dragon skeleton occupied by Garou and find the dragon skull behind it. Mine its teeth to collect a Dragon Tooth. A lower-tier pickaxe will not meet the quest’s gathering requirement.

The Stormtouched Highlands are dangerous enough that the gathering trip should be treated as its own objective. Secure the tooth before taking unnecessary fights or loading your inventory with unrelated materials.

Prepare the Bronze Bars

Bring five completed Bronze Bars. The quest calls for the bars themselves, so do not arrive at the horn-crafting step with only unprocessed copper and tin.

Once you have one Dragon Tooth, one Bloodwood Sap, and five Bronze Bars, craft the Challenge Horn using the recipe learned from Cathan. Keep the finished horn with you for the return to Velgar’s Rise.

Prepare for the Velgar fight

Before entering the tower, bring good armour, your most dependable weapon, food, and antipoison potions. The quest does not require one specific combat style, but your setup needs to survive poison, repeated area attacks, and several aerial transitions.

Velgar’s arena is at the top of the tower and has a triangular layout with a dragonkin altar in the center. Place the Challenge Horn on that altar to summon him. Once the horn is placed, Velgar arrives at one corner and the fight begins.

Place the Challenge Horn at this altar to begin the Velgar encounter.

Velgar uses several related attacks:

  • Poison spray: A forward poison attack that punishes remaining in its path.
  • Poison puddle bombs: Projectiles create dangerous poison zones on the arena floor.
  • Two-leg stomp: This sends spikes in your direction.
  • Close-range stomp: When you remain near him, he can stomp with the nearer leg.
  • Bite and head swing: His close-range sequence also includes a forward bite and a sideways strike with his head.

His attacks have noticeable delays before they connect. Watch the wind-up, move before the hit lands, and use the pause after an attack to deal damage. Do not spend the entire fight reacting to the first poison zone while ignoring the next attack animation.

Defeat Velgar through all four health segments

The fight changes position whenever Velgar loses another quarter of his health.

  1. First segment: Fight him at his initial corner. Learn the delay on his poison attacks, stomp, spikes, bite, and head swing rather than committing to long attacks at unsafe times.
  2. At three-quarters health: Velgar flies away and launches the poison puddle bomb attack several times. Keep moving around clear ground until the aerial sequence ends.
  3. Second segment: He lands at the next corner in a clockwise direction. His attack types remain the same, but he begins chaining multiple attacks before pausing.
  4. At half health: He takes flight again and repeats the aerial poison bombardment before landing at the next corner.
  5. Third segment: Continue reading the same attack cues while accounting for the poison zones already occupying parts of the arena.
  6. At one-quarter health: Velgar performs the aerial sequence once more and then returns to the original edge.
  7. Final segment: Finish the remaining health without abandoning the defensive rhythm. The attacks are familiar by this point, but accumulated poison areas can reduce the safe space available for dodging.

The important pattern is consistent: damage Velgar while he is grounded, stop chasing him when he takes flight, avoid the repeated poison impacts, and resume attacking after he lands. Antipoison helps manage the quest’s central damage threat, but it does not make standing inside visible attacks a safe strategy.

When Velgar dies, you receive his head. The boss kill alone does not complete Dragon Slayer.

Turn in Velgar’s head

Leave the tower after the battle. The Wise Old Man appears outside where Cathan’s ghost had been. Speak to him and hand over Velgar’s head to finish the quest.

Make room in your inventory before completing the final conversation. Dragon Slayer’s end-of-quest reward pack contains a Tome of the Dragon Slayer, a noxious draconic visage, and an anti-dragon shield. Earlier, after following Cathan into Ghornfell, another quest reward pack contains three clay, three redberries, and three harralander.

Completing Dragon Slayer clears the main-story requirement leading toward Withering Heights, but that later quest is a separate walkthrough and is not part of the Velgar route.

Fix objectives that appear stuck

If the objective seems to stop advancing, check the interaction required at the current search area before assuming the quest is broken:

  • At the Keep of Blue Flames, reach the top and read Cathan’s Journal. Entering the circle or killing every goblin is not the trigger.
  • In the Whispering Swamp, enter the blue-flame vault and speak to Spitfoot near the end, close to the lever that opens the boss room.
  • At Velgar’s Rise, speak to Cathan’s ghost to learn the Challenge Horn recipe before gathering the horn materials.
  • At the central altar, carry the completed Challenge Horn. The separate ingredients cannot summon Velgar.
  • After defeating Velgar, take his head to the Wise Old Man outside the tower and complete the handover with free inventory space.

Following those interaction points in order prevents the most common progression mistake: reaching the correct location but leaving before activating the journal, conversation, recipe, altar, or final turn-in that advances the quest.

See the Withering Heights walkthrough for the requirements and steps of that next task.
