Abyssal Whip: 1.0 Recipe

Quick Answer

Craft the Power Level 4 Abysmal Whip first, then use the Umbral Sands recipe route to unlock the Power Level 7 Abyssal Whip. Check your platform patch if the recipe does not unlock.

The RuneScape Dragonwilds Abyssal Whip changed completely in version 1.0. The real Abyssal Whip is now a Power Level 7 one-handed Masterwork weapon. You can no longer follow the old early-game route and craft it directly after finding an Abyssal Spine.

The new route has two stages. First, kill an Abyssal Demon to obtain the Abyssal Remains recipe and an Abyssal Spine, then craft the Power Level 4 Abysmal Whip. Later, take that weapon to the Dragonkin statue near the Fight Cave in Umbral Sands to unlock the superior whip recipe. The final craft requires the Abysmal Whip plus Demonic Oil, Scorch Leather, Cursed Essence, and Dragonstone.

The official 1.0.0.5 patch notes, updated on 25 September 2026, list a fix for the Abyssal Whip recipe unlock on existing characters. Check your platform’s installed patch if the statue does not respond; console rollout timing may differ. An old Bloodblight Swamp route is not a substitute for the revised recipe.

The Abyssal Whip changes in version 1.0

Before 1.0, players could obtain the Abyssal Whip much earlier by defeating Abyssal Demons around the Ghornfell swamps and using a Dragonkin Vault recipe. That version of the route is obsolete. The official 1.0 rework divided the weapon into a base vestige and a later Masterwork form.

The similar names are deliberate, but they refer to different items. Abysmal is the unfinished Power Level 4 weapon. Abyssal is the completed Power Level 7 weapon. If a guide treats those names as interchangeable or sends you to the old Bloodblight Swamp recipe route, it is describing an earlier version of the game.

Players who owned an Abyssal Whip before the rework did not keep the old item as the completed Power Level 7 Masterwork weapon. Existing copies were replaced by the Abysmal Whip in the live game, leaving the owner with the base weapon needed for the new upgrade chain.

Complete 1.0 acquisition route

The minimum supported route is to obtain the Abysmal Whip, carry it into Umbral Sands, unlock the Masterwork recipe at the correct statue, and complete the second craft at a Blacksmith's Bench.

Obtain the Abyssal Remains recipe

Kill an Abyssal Demon to acquire the Abyssal Remains recipe. Abyssal Demons continue to drop the Abyssal Spine used in the base craft, and they can also drop Tier 4 Upgrade Shards.

The Demon encounter is now the start of the whip chain rather than the source of the finished iconic weapon. After the recipe becomes available, confirm that you are looking at Abysmal Whip in the Blacksmith's Bench crafting menu. Searching only for Abyssal Whip at this stage can make a correct unlock look like a missing recipe.

Craft the Power Level 4 Abysmal Whip

Use a Blacksmith's Bench to craft the base weapon with these materials:

  • 1 Abyssal Spine
  • 3 Shrapnel
  • 3 Swamp Thread
  • 3 Adhesive
  • 4 Vault Shards

The result is a Power Level 4 one-handed slash weapon with a five-hit attack combo and bleed buildup on regular attacks. It does not have Abyssal Snare. Its main purpose for this route is to act as the required weapon and crafting component for the true Abyssal Whip, although it remains a usable weapon in its own right.

Keep the Abysmal Whip in your inventory after crafting it. Do not discard it when replacing your active combat equipment, because the final recipe consumes one copy.

Reach the late-game Umbral Sands stage

The completed Abyssal Whip is no longer positioned as an early or mid-game reward. Its Masterwork recipe is in Umbral Sands, in the shadow of the Burning Spire. This places the real weapon much later in progression than its pre-1.0 version.

Do not revisit the old Bloodblight Swamp vault expecting it to unlock the current Masterwork recipe. That vault-and-spine method belongs to the former route. The 1.0 destination is the Dragonkin statue near the Fight Cave in Umbral Sands.

Unlock the Masterwork recipe in Umbral Sands

Equip the Abysmal Whip before interacting with the Dragonkin statue near the Fight Cave. The supplied location data places the statue directly north of the Fight Cave, in the lava. The interaction checks the weapon you are wielding, so merely carrying the Abysmal Whip may not be enough.

Use this order to avoid an ambiguous failure:

  1. Bring the Abysmal Whip to the Fight Cave area in Umbral Sands.
  2. Equip the Abysmal Whip as your active weapon.
  3. Find the Dragonkin statue directly north of the Fight Cave in the lava.
  4. Interact with the statue while the weapon remains equipped.
  5. Check whether the Abyssal Whip recipe has appeared at a Blacksmith's Bench.

If the statue fails to unlock the recipe after those checks, confirm whether your platform has the 1.0.0.5 fix. The supplied evidence does not establish a second hidden prerequisite or an alternate recipe location.

Craft the Power Level 7 Abyssal Whip

Once the Masterwork recipe is unlocked, return to a Blacksmith's Bench with the complete material set:

  • 1 Abysmal Whip
  • 6 Demonic Oil
  • 6 Scorch Leather
  • 6 Cursed Essence
  • 4 Dragonstone

Crafting consumes the Abysmal Whip and produces the Power Level 7 Abyssal Whip. Before starting the craft, verify the quantities of all four supporting materials. The recipe does not use a loose Abyssal Spine at this stage; that spine was already incorporated into the base weapon.

Complete crafting checklist

The two recipes use separate material groups. Collecting only the ingredients shown by an older guide will leave you unable to finish the 1.0 chain.

Crafting stageFacilityRequired materialsOutput
Base weaponBlacksmith's Bench1 Abyssal Spine, 3 Shrapnel, 3 Swamp Thread, 3 Adhesive, 4 Vault Shards1 Abysmal Whip at Power Level 4
Masterwork weaponBlacksmith's Bench1 Abysmal Whip, 6 Demonic Oil, 6 Scorch Leather, 6 Cursed Essence, 4 Dragonstone1 Abyssal Whip at Power Level 7

The supplied research confirms the required quantities but does not establish dependable farming locations for every supporting material. Gather each named item through your current 1.0 progression and use the table as the final inventory check. Do not substitute similarly named leather, essence, oil, or gemstone items.

Avoid wasting Ascension Cores

The Abysmal Whip can be ascended before you obtain the Masterwork recipe, but ascending it is not required to create the final weapon. Its supported upgrade values are:

Abysmal Whip power levelBase damageCumulative listed core requirement
444–76Base item
559–1031 Power Level 5 Ascension Core
676–1331 Power Level 5 core and 1 Power Level 6 core
794–164One core for each level from 5 through 7
8112–196One core for each level from 5 through 8

If your goal is the completed Abyssal Whip, do not ascend the Abysmal Whip to Power Level 8 first. Converting a Power Level 8 Abysmal Whip into the superior weapon brings it down to Power Level 7. The Power Level 8 core therefore does not carry its level through the Masterwork conversion.

An already ascended Power Level 7 Abysmal Whip can still serve as the required component, but the finished result begins at the Abyssal Whip's own Power Level 7 baseline. The rework is a recipe conversion, not a name change that preserves every base-weapon upgrade.

After crafting the real Abyssal Whip, it can be ascended to Power Level 8 with one Power Level 8 Ascension Core. The listed Power Level 8 damage range is 118–206. A Power Level 9 damage row exists in the supplied structured data, but the means to create that version is not currently available because of a bug. Do not plan the route around reaching Power Level 9.

Abyssal Whip stats and combat effects

The completed weapon is a one-handed Masterwork melee weapon dealing slash damage. Its Power Level 7 combat profile is:

StatPower Level 7 value
Base damage100–175
Attack styleWhip
Attack combo5
Block5
Durability1,600
Weight4.5
Power Level 7 Abyssal Whip inventory icon

The final weapon retains bleed pressure and adds the feature missing from the Abysmal version. Its three listed combat effects define how it differs from an ordinary one-handed slash weapon:

  • Abyssal Snare costs 50 special attack energy. It launches homing demonic energy that damages the target and knocks it down.
  • Barbed Attacks build bleed on enemies during regular attacks.
  • Reckless allows blocking through the unarmed-block behavior rather than granting the stronger block profile associated with a shield.

Abyssal Snare is the clearest confirmation that you have the finished weapon. If the item in your inventory builds bleed but has no special attack, you are holding the Abysmal Whip, not the 1.0 Masterwork Abyssal Whip.

The distinction matters when evaluating damage numbers as well. A Power Level 7 Abysmal Whip lists 94–164 base damage, while the completed Power Level 7 Abyssal Whip lists 100–175 and includes Abyssal Snare. Raising the base weapon to the same displayed power level does not turn it into the superior version.

Recipe and crafting failure checks

The base recipe does not appear

Confirm that you have killed an Abyssal Demon in the 1.0 version and are searching for Abysmal Whip, not Abyssal Whip. The recipe name is Abyssal Remains, while the item it creates is Abysmal Whip. The three similar names can make the correct unlock easy to overlook.

Do not use a pre-1.0 instruction that tells you to carry an Abyssal Spine into the Bloodblight Swamp vault. That route described the former weapon and does not unlock the current Umbral Sands Masterwork recipe.

The Umbral Sands statue does not respond

Check all three supported conditions: the location is the Dragonkin statue near the Fight Cave, the statue is directly north in the lava, and the Abysmal Whip is actively wielded during the interaction. Carrying the weapon without equipping it is not the documented method.

If all three conditions are satisfied and the recipe remains locked, check the installed patch and the official 1.0.0.5 recipe fix. Repeating old vault steps, ascending the base weapon, or gathering extra copies of the final materials is not established as a workaround.

The final recipe is visible but cannot be crafted

Use a Blacksmith's Bench and compare the inventory against the final recipe rather than the base recipe. You need one completed Abysmal Whip, six Demonic Oil, six Scorch Leather, six Cursed Essence, and four Dragonstone. An Abyssal Spine by itself cannot replace the Abysmal Whip.

An old save contains a different whip

The 1.0 conversion replaced existing Abyssal Whips with the Abysmal Whip. A formerly upgraded whip may therefore retain a high power level while lacking Abyssal Snare. Identify it by its actual name and effects, not by what it was called before the update. That converted item can supply the required Abysmal Whip for the Masterwork craft once the new recipe is unlocked.

Final route summary

Use this sequence as the last check before committing materials:

  1. Kill an Abyssal Demon and obtain the Abyssal Remains recipe.
  2. Collect an Abyssal Spine, 3 Shrapnel, 3 Swamp Thread, 3 Adhesive, and 4 Vault Shards.
  3. Craft the Power Level 4 Abysmal Whip at a Blacksmith's Bench.
  4. Progress to Umbral Sands and travel to the Fight Cave area.
  5. Equip the Abysmal Whip and interact with the Dragonkin statue directly north of the Fight Cave in the lava.
  6. Confirm that the Power Level 7 Abyssal Whip recipe is unlocked.
  7. Collect 6 Demonic Oil, 6 Scorch Leather, 6 Cursed Essence, and 4 Dragonstone.
  8. Craft the final Abyssal Whip at a Blacksmith's Bench.
  9. Verify that the finished weapon has 100–175 base damage and the Abyssal Snare special attack.

This route produces the actual version 1.0 Abyssal Whip. The early Power Level 4 weapon remains the Abysmal Whip until it is consumed in the Umbral Sands Masterwork recipe.
