Steel Bars & Crafting

Quick Answer

Make Steel Bars at a Blast Furnace using iron ore, iron bars or Steel Salvage Piles with coal. Fuel Pellets power the station separately; choose the recipe that matches your supplies.

Make Steel Bars in a Blast Furnace using 3 Iron Ore + 3 Coal, 1 Iron Bar + 3 Coal, or 9 Steel Salvage Piles + 3 Coal per bar. These are alternative recipes: choose one iron or salvage input, then add the Coal. The furnace also needs Fuel Pellets; Coal in the recipe does not replace them.

The recipes below follow the community Wiki's Steel Bar data, checked on 20 October 2026. You need access to a working Blast Furnace before starting this production chain.

Choose the input you already have

RouteMaterials for 1 Steel BarWhen to use it
Raw ore3 Iron Ore + 3 CoalYou are bringing back fresh mining supplies
Existing bars1 Iron Bar + 3 CoalYou already have Iron Bars in storage
Salvage9 Steel Salvage Piles + 3 CoalYou have collected the named salvage material

All three routes produce 1 Steel Bar. The Iron Bar recipe lets you use existing stock without starting another ore run. It does not reduce the underlying iron requirement: the Iron Ore entry records 3 Iron Ore for 1 Iron Bar.

If you are starting with ore, you can put it directly into the steel recipe. Smelting it into Iron Bars first adds another processing step. Save the bar route for stock you already have, or for iron you need to divide between different crafting jobs.

The Wiki lists Artisan experience beside these recipes: 15 XP for the ore and salvage routes, and 10 XP for the Iron Bar route. Those figures are crafting experience, not Artisan level requirements.

Supply the furnace and its fuel separately

  1. Gather Coal. Obtaining it for the first time unlocks the Blast Furnace recipe.
  2. Prepare a Blast Furnace with open space above it. The station entry states that it cannot operate under a roof.
  3. Add the materials for your chosen steel recipe.
  4. Supply Fuel Pellets and collect the resulting Steel Bars.

For construction costs and station setup, use the Furnace guide. The key distinction here is that a basic Furnace and a Blast Furnace have different jobs: use the Blast Furnace for these steel recipes.

Craft 1 Fuel Pellet at a Blacksmith's Bench from:

  • 1 Charcoal
  • 1 Adhesive
  • 1 Coarse Animal Fur

The Fuel Pellet entry says you must have Coal in your inventory and build a Blast Furnace to unlock the recipe. If the recipe remains missing despite holding Coal, it suggests mining a Coal Node directly.

Coal and Charcoal are separate materials. Coal goes into the Steel Bar recipe; Charcoal goes into Fuel Pellets. Keep both supplies available. The material budgets below exclude furnace fuel, so do not treat them as a pellet-per-bar calculation.

Choose one input column rather than adding all three. For a mixed batch, count each bar's input separately; every bar still adds 3 Coal to the bill.

Coal Nodes occur in Fellhollow, Dowdun Reach and Umbral Sands. Iron Ore is mainly found in the Stormtouched Highlands and Fellhollow. If you are beginning steel production in Fellhollow, collecting both on the same trip can cover the two recipe inputs. Use the Coal location guide for a dedicated gathering route.

If you already have access to Beartach the Merchant, the community Coal entry and Iron Ore entry list both ingredients in his shop. Buying the materials is an alternative to another mining run once they are available in your shop inventory; you still need the Blast Furnace and its fuel.

Match your steel budget to the item

Steel is used for tools, weapons, armour, ammunition and some building recipes. You do not need to craft every steel item before spending your bars on the one you want.

The tools and sword above are made at the Blacksmith's Bench; arrows and bolts use the Fletching Bench. A Steel Full Helm, Platebody and Platelegs together require 20 Steel Bars, before their other ingredients. Check the armour guide for the equipment recipes and defence comparison.
