RuneScape Dragonwilds Charcoal

Quick Answer

Process a log or plank in a Kiln to make one Charcoal. Use a Sawmill first to obtain more planks per log. Charcoal is a crafted fuel; Coal is a separate mined material.

Charcoal in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is made by processing supported logs or planks in a Kiln. One valid wood input produces one Charcoal, but milling logs into planks before burning them can double the amount obtained from each starting log. Charcoal then provides three minutes of fuel time at compatible facilities and is required for several recipes, including Fuel Pellets, Naptha, and the Furnace building.

The main limitation is that Charcoal and Coal are different materials. Charcoal comes from wood and a Kiln; Coal is mined and belongs to a separate metal-processing chain. If a recipe specifically asks for Coal, Charcoal is not the listed substitute.

What Charcoal Is

Charcoal is a basic processed material described in the game as wood burned in a Kiln. It has two distinct roles:

  • It can be loaded as fuel into a Campfire or Furnace.
  • It can be consumed as an ingredient in crafting and building recipes.

A unit of Charcoal supplies three minutes of facility fuel time, making it more efficient than placing ordinary wood directly into a compatible fuel slot. Charcoal has a stack limit of 99, so large production runs can be stored compactly compared with carrying the same number of separate wood inputs.

Charcoal may also appear as a common, single-item drop from a Dead Tree. That is a useful incidental pickup, but the repeatable production method is to place supported wood in a Kiln. Treat Dead Trees as an occasional supplement rather than the basis of a dependable supply plan.

Supported Wood Inputs

The Kiln accepts the following inputs. Every listed operation converts one input item into one Charcoal and awards 20 Artisan experience.

Input categorySupported inputQuantityOutput
LogAsh Logs11 Charcoal
LogOak Logs11 Charcoal
LogWillow Logs11 Charcoal
LogBlightwood11 Charcoal
LogMaple Logs11 Charcoal
LogYew Logs11 Charcoal
PlankAsh Plank11 Charcoal
PlankOak Plank11 Charcoal
PlankYew Plank11 Charcoal

The 20 Artisan value is experience awarded by the recipe, not a requirement to reach Artisan level 20. Do not postpone production because that table value looks like a level gate.

The plank list is narrower than the log list. Ash, Oak, and Yew Planks are explicitly supported, while Willow Logs, Blightwood, and Maple Logs appear only as direct wood inputs in the recipe list. Use an input actually displayed by your Kiln instead of assuming that every plank type follows the same rule.

Make Charcoal in a Kiln

Once a Kiln is available at your base, the production sequence is short:

  1. Gather one of the supported logs, Blightwood, or supported planks listed above.
  2. Interact with the Kiln and open its processing recipes.
  3. Select the Charcoal recipe corresponding to the wood in your inventory.
  4. Add the desired number of inputs to the processing queue.
  5. Start the Kiln and collect the finished Charcoal after processing completes.
  6. Move completed stacks into storage or directly to the facility or recipe that needs them.

Build a Kiln before gathering a large batch. Check its construction requirements in your in-game Build Menu.

For a small emergency batch, direct log processing is adequate: one valid log becomes one Charcoal. For any sustained fuel or crafting demand, add the Sawmill step described below before loading the Kiln.

Double Your Output with Planks

The efficient route is to mill eligible logs into planks first and then burn those planks in the Kiln. The plank route produces twice as much Charcoal from the starting logs:

  1. Bring Ash, Oak, or Yew Logs to a Sawmill.
  2. Mill each log into two corresponding planks.
  3. Transfer the planks to a Kiln.
  4. Process each plank into one Charcoal.
  5. Collect two Charcoal for every original log used in the chain.

The Sawmill converts logs into planks before the Kiln step.

Starting supplyDirectly burnedMilled before burning
1 eligible log1 Charcoal2 Charcoal
10 eligible logs10 Charcoal20 Charcoal

Milling improves material yield. It does not change the one-plank-to-one-Charcoal recipe or establish a processing-speed bonus.

The direct route still has a place. Burn logs immediately when you need a few units and do not want to move material between two facilities. Use the plank route when wood supply, gathering time, or total output matters more than minimizing interactions.

Do not extend the doubling rule to every wood type without checking the available recipes. The recipe list includes Charcoal inputs for Ash, Oak, and Yew Planks. Willow, Maple, and Blightwood are confirmed as direct Kiln inputs, so check the Kiln before relying on other plank types.

Plan a Charcoal Batch

Start with the final use, calculate the required Charcoal, and then choose the direct or plank route. This prevents a common production mistake: burning the exact amount needed for fuel and only afterward noticing that a building or crafted item also consumes Charcoal.

For fuel planning, multiply the number of Charcoal by three minutes:

Charcoal loadedListed fuel time
13 minutes
1030 minutes
2060 minutes

The table expresses the listed fuel contribution of Charcoal. It does not claim that a particular cooking, smelting, or processing job finishes within that duration, because individual recipe times and facility workloads are separate variables.

A practical batch order is:

  1. Reserve the exact Charcoal needed as a recipe or building ingredient.
  2. Place that reserved amount in a separate storage stack if necessary.
  3. Use the remainder as facility fuel.
  4. When starting from Ash, Oak, or Yew Logs, mill half the desired Charcoal count in eligible logs, rounding up if necessary.
  5. Leave spare wood unprocessed if it is also needed for construction or other recipes.

For example, a Furnace building consumes four Charcoal. If you also want 30 minutes of fuel, reserve four units for construction and ten units for fuel, giving a total target of 14 Charcoal. Seven eligible logs processed through the plank route provide that amount; direct burning would require 14 valid logs.

Use Charcoal as Fuel

Charcoal is accepted as fuel by the Campfire and Furnace. Place it in the facility’s fuel slot rather than in a normal ingredient slot. Each unit contributes three minutes of fuel time.

At a Campfire, the advantage is straightforward: one unit keeps the facility fueled longer than an ordinary piece of wood, so repeated cooking or water-processing work consumes fewer individual fuel items. At a Furnace, the same three-minute contribution supports longer material-processing queues. Charcoal’s value is the duration it adds, not a different recipe result; the ingredients in the active recipe still determine what the facility produces.

Keep fuel and ingredient quantities separate when planning. A recipe that includes Charcoal consumes it as a material. Loading Charcoal into a facility’s fuel slot does not automatically satisfy a Charcoal ingredient requirement, and reserving an ingredient in your inventory does not provide operating fuel.

A full stack is convenient for a frequently used production area, but there is no need to commit it all to one facility. Split the stack according to the queue you are preparing and retain the rest for recipes or later sessions.

Recipes That Consume Charcoal

Three useful recipes consume Charcoal as an ingredient. These are separate from simply burning Charcoal in a facility.

ResultFacilityCharcoal requiredOther required materials
1 Fuel PelletBlacksmith Bench11 Adhesive and 1 Coarse Animal Fur
1 FurnaceBuild Menu424 Stone, 8 Clay, 10 Fire Rune, and 8 Vault Shard
1 NapthaBrewing Cauldron11 Swamp Tar and 1 Clay Vessel

For Fuel Pellets, Charcoal is one part of a three-material recipe. Check your Adhesive and fur stock before converting all available Charcoal into fuel.

For the Furnace, four Charcoal are building materials alongside Stone, Clay, Fire Runes, and Vault Shards. Reserve those four units before fueling other facilities. Spending the last Charcoal at a Campfire can otherwise leave the building recipe incomplete even when every other component is ready.

Naptha uses one Charcoal at a Brewing Cauldron with one Swamp Tar and one Clay Vessel. This is an ingredient conversion, so the Charcoal must be available to the recipe in addition to any fuel the facility may require.

Charcoal and Coal Are Different

Charcoal is not the same item as Coal, despite the similar names and their shared association with fuel and metalworking.

MaterialPrimary sourceProcessing role
CharcoalProcess supported wood in a KilnFacility fuel plus specific crafting and building recipes
CoalMine Coal Nodes or obtain it from listed loot sourcesIngredient for higher-tier bars at a Blast Furnace

Coal appears in Blast Furnace recipes for Steel, Mithril, Adamant, and Black Metal Bars. Those recipes list Coal specifically. Do not arrive at a Blast Furnace with only Charcoal and expect it to fill a Coal requirement.

The quickest identification rule is to check the source. If you are burning wood at a Kiln, the output is Charcoal. If you are mining a dark mineral node or collecting Coal from an eligible loot source, the item is Coal. Keep them in separately named storage stacks so that batch preparation does not mix the two.

Fix Common Charcoal Problems

If the Kiln does not show the conversion you expected, compare the input against the supported list. Ash Logs, Oak Logs, Willow Logs, Blightwood, Maple Logs, and Yew Logs are confirmed direct inputs. Ash, Oak, and Yew Planks are the confirmed plank inputs. An unlisted plank should not be assumed to work merely because its log can be burned.

If your output seems lower than expected, check whether you skipped the Sawmill. Direct processing gives one Charcoal from one valid log. The doubled result comes from turning an eligible log into two supported planks and then processing both planks. The Kiln itself does not turn one log directly into two Charcoal.

If a recipe still appears unavailable after Charcoal is collected, inspect every other ingredient and the required facility. Fuel Pellets require a Blacksmith Bench, Adhesive, and Coarse Animal Fur. Naptha requires a Brewing Cauldron, Swamp Tar, and a Clay Vessel. The Furnace is placed through the Build Menu and requires five different material types in total.

If a metal-bar recipe rejects your material, verify that it asks for Coal rather than Charcoal. Charcoal’s presence in the Furnace building recipe does not make it interchangeable with the Coal used by Blast Furnace bar recipes.

If you are collecting Charcoal only from Dead Trees, switch to Kiln production for predictable quantities. A Dead Tree can provide one Charcoal as a common source, but that incidental drop does not offer the controlled one-to-one processing queue or the doubled plank route available at your base.
