Make Fine Thread by processing 4 Corpse Cotton at a Spinning Wheel. Each recipe produces one Fine Thread and gives 20 Artisan experience. The wheel needs a roof above it to work. Fine Thread is the intermediate material you keep for stitching and bowstrings, or feed into a Loom when your actual target is Fine Cloth.
Do not convert every thread into cloth as soon as it finishes. The two items have different recipes and uses: Fine Cloth consumes three Fine Thread plus one Gold Bar, while many bows, weapons, and construction recipes require the thread itself. Check the final item first, reserve its thread requirement, and process only the remainder into cloth.
Identify the thread before crafting
Fine Thread is a processed material made from Corpse Cotton. Its item description refers to bowstrings and stitching weapons and gear. Each thread weighs 0.3, and its stack limit is 99. Those details distinguish it from the plant material you bring home and from the cloth produced at the next station.

Several materials share the word “thread,” but they are separate inputs. Flax produces Coarse Thread, Desert Weed produces Desert Thread, and Mystic Fibres produce Mystic Thread. A Fine Thread requirement therefore cannot be filled merely by producing another thread at the same station. Read the selected output name before committing a batch, especially when the wheel holds materials for several projects.
Corpse Cotton is the raw input. Fine Thread is the spun output. Fine Cloth is a later woven output. Keeping those three names separate solves most confusion when a recipe appears to ask for a material you already collected. The possession of cotton does not mean you already have thread, and possessing thread does not complete a cloth requirement.
Build a working Spinning Wheel
The Spinning Wheel unlocks when you first harvest a Flax plant and receive Flax. Build it from the Build Menu using the following materials. The experience listed for building the station is an award, rather than a Construction level requirement.
| Station | Materials | Building experience |
|---|---|---|
| Spinning Wheel | 12 Ash Logs, 4 Flax, 2 Stone | 12 Construction XP |
The wheel belongs to Material Processing. Place it where a roof covers it, then check that you can interact with it and select the thread recipe. A wheel sitting in an open yard is not a complete production setup even if its building materials were correct. Resolve the missing shelter before collecting another large load of cotton.

The station processes slowly enough that keeping it supplied while doing other tasks is useful. Treat the wheel as an ongoing part of your workshop rather than standing beside it for every thread. There is also an Advanced Spinning Wheel with a secondary spinning slot, but a normal Spinning Wheel is the station listed for the Fine Thread recipe. You do not need to invent an upgrade requirement to begin producing this material.
Arrange the relevant materials so the production decision stays visible: cotton is stock for the wheel, finished thread is stock for crafting or the Loom, and Gold Bars belong to the later cloth step. This is an inventory organization method, not an additional station requirement. It prevents a weapon project from quietly losing its bowstrings to an unrelated cloth batch.
Turn Corpse Cotton into Fine Thread
Use this order once you have a working wheel and enough cotton:
- Decide which finished item needs Fine Thread and read that recipe's quantity.
- Bring enough Corpse Cotton for the intended thread output, allowing four cotton for each thread.
- Interact with the Spinning Wheel and select Fine Thread rather than another thread recipe.
- Supply the cotton and let the processing finish.
- Collect the finished Fine Thread and keep the portion reserved for direct crafting.
- Send thread to the Loom only if your next recipe requires Fine Cloth.
The conversion has one input and one output: four Corpse Cotton become one Fine Thread. It does not consume Gold Bars, Fine Cloth, or a different thread. The Gold Bar appears only in the Fine Cloth recipe. If you are gathering gold merely to finish a bowstring requirement, you have combined two separate stages of production.
| Desired Fine Thread | Corpse Cotton needed |
|---|---|
| 1 | 4 |
| 2 | 8 |
| 3 | 12 |
| 4 | 16 |
| 6 | 24 |
| 8 | 32 |
| 10 | 40 |
| 12 | 48 |
These totals follow the fixed recipe. They are crafting budgets, not a forecast of drops per trip or a guaranteed gathering speed. Cotton can come from Corpse Cotton plants or Zogres; use the separate Corpse Cotton guide when you need the gathering route. This page starts with the processing requirement so it does not send you through another full harvesting walkthrough.
Reserve thread for the item you actually want
Fine Thread enters several production branches. The table below highlights its quantity and the destination station without reproducing every ingredient in each weapon recipe. You must still meet the other requirements shown by the final crafting station.
| Target | Fine Thread required | Destination |
|---|---|---|
| Fine Cloth | 3 | Loom, also consumes 1 Gold Bar |
| Fine Net | 2 | Crafting Table |
| Splitbark Wand | 2 | Mystic Forge |
| Splitbark Staff | 4 | Mystic Forge |
| Necromancer's Staff | 4 | Mystic Forge |
| Shroud of Noggin | 3 | Crafting Table |
| Steel Dagger | 3 | Blacksmith's Bench |
| Steel Sword | 3 | Blacksmith's Bench |
| Steel Greatsword | 4 | Blacksmith's Bench |
| Steel Logging Axe | 4 | Blacksmith's Bench |
| Steel Crossbow | 6 | Fletching Bench |
| Willow Shortbow | 4 | Fletching Bench |
| Willow Longbow | 8 | Fletching Bench |
| Undead Ranger's Bow | 4 | Fletching Bench |
| Ulv's Longbow | 8 | Fletching Bench |
| Willow Rod | 1 | Blacksmith's Bench |
| Stonecutter | 8 | Build Menu |
A bow with an eight-thread requirement needs 32 Corpse Cotton for that part of the recipe. A four-thread item needs 16 cotton. If you are making both, add the thread requirements before spinning: twelve thread means 48 cotton. That arithmetic lets you choose an exact production target instead of collecting a vague “large amount” and discovering the shortage at the final station.
For a Steel Logging Axe, the rest of the listed recipe includes eight Steel Bars and six Willow Logs. Fine Thread covers the stitching requirement, but it does not replace those other materials. The same distinction matters for a Stonecutter, which also uses Oak Logs, Steel Bars, and a Vault Core. Finish the complete ingredient check before you consume stock that several projects share.

Keep the Fine Cloth branch separate
Fine Cloth is made at a Loom using three Fine Thread and one Gold Bar. Starting from cotton, the thread part therefore costs twelve Corpse Cotton per cloth. You need both processing stages: spin the cotton, then weave the resulting thread with gold. Putting cotton directly into the Loom skips an intermediate item the recipe requires.
If you need five Fine Cloth, reserve fifteen Fine Thread and five Gold Bars. Producing those fifteen thread from scratch requires sixty Corpse Cotton. If you also want a Willow Shortbow, add its four thread before you start: nineteen thread in total, with fifteen for cloth and four kept for the bow. Keep the gold budget separate because it is consumed only by the cloth branch.
Read the dedicated Fine Cloth guide for the Loom setup and armour planning. It is useful when cloth is your final objective; remain on the thread recipe when your target is a bow, staff, tool, or another item that consumes thread directly.
Use salvage as an extra source
Fine Thread is also listed among Textile Salvage results, with a quantity of two to three and a recorded rarity of 16.67 out of 100. That makes salvage an additional source of finished thread. It does not turn every salvage action into a guaranteed thread reward, and it does not establish a dependable hourly supply.
Count any finished thread already in storage before deciding how much cotton to process. If a project needs eight thread and you already have two, you only need six more, which takes 24 cotton. This applies regardless of whether your existing stock came from the wheel or salvage. The useful quantity is the thread you can spend now, rather than the number of raw materials collected previously.
Diagnose a stalled thread project
The wheel is built but will not work
Check the roof above the station first. Shelter is a stated operating requirement. Then confirm that you are interacting with the Spinning Wheel and have selected Fine Thread. A different station or a different thread output will not solve a missing Fine Thread requirement, even when the supplied fibre looks similar.
You have cotton but the next recipe remains short
Count processed Fine Thread rather than raw Corpse Cotton. Four cotton make only one thread, so an inventory holding eight cotton covers a two-thread requirement. A four-thread weapon needs twice that amount. Allow the processing to finish and collect the output before checking the destination recipe again.
You spent thread and still cannot make the item
Read the full recipe at its destination station. Fine Thread is often only one part of a weapon or construction recipe. Steel, wood, leather, gems, and Vault Shards remain independent requirements where listed. Producing more thread cannot fix a missing Gold Bar for cloth or a missing Sapphire for a bow.
Your stock disappeared into cloth production
Calculate the two branches separately on the next batch. Mark the thread quantity needed for direct crafting before setting the Loom target. Convert only the cloth allocation. This avoids undoing progress on one item while completing another, and keeps a simple cotton-to-thread production chain from becoming an unnecessary repeated gathering trip.
